App Smackdown: Garageband
Today, I have a short presentation to share about the application Garageband, it's utility, and professional application. Please check out the end of the article for a video of this presentation.
The Basics
Garageband is a digital audio recording and editing tool made by Apple for their iOS devices. It includes the capabilities for standard voice recording from a microphone, recording instruments from an audio input device, and creating tracks using premade MiDi sounds.
Layout
Following Apple’s UI design theory, this application is intended to be able to be picked up easily by the average layman who doesn’t have an extensive history of working with DAWS or Digital Audio Workstations. Apple also includes a “help” feature and extensive tutorials on their website to provide extra support. As a demonstration of this tool as used by the average person, I recorded the audio for this presentation using my own device’s copy of Garageband and my device’s onboard microphone.
How Can This Be Used Professionally
Since 2013, this application comes pre-downloaded on most new Apple devices, including iPad and iPhone, making it ideal for the average consumer. Apple also has a professional grade version of this software called Logic Pro. The downside to this application is that it is only available on Apple devices.
I use this application for recording voice over and editing audio for videos in my own freelance work, although using professional recording equipment.

Shaun,
ReplyDeleteEven though I have had apple devices for a while, I have never used Garagenband. However, my son seems to like to play around with it. It does seem very interesting to use now that your presentation gives more clarity as to what the app is and what it does.
Hi Shaun. Just like you said, Garageband does pretty much come with every new Apple device, as I have come across it several times when setting up any of my new Apple products over the years. This does make it very accessible, which is ideal, as free and already loaded-in apps are always a plus. As someone who never really took the time to look into Garageband, I had no clue it could be used for creating voiceovers or audio editing. In that case, I definitely will be playing around with it because I know it will come in handy.
